Estep and Exclusive Autosport Earn 2016 Formula 1600 Super Series Title at Calabogie

Near-perfect weekend sees Estep score three poles, two wins, and a track record at Ted Powell Memorial
Calabogie, Ontario  – A near-perfect weekend for Trenton Estep and Exclusive Autosport in the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship races at Calabogie Motorsports Park resulted in the team securing the 2016 Formula 1600 Super Series title.

Estep and the rest of the North American Spectrum factory team were unquestionably the class of the field all weekend long, which they demonstrated by setting the fastest lap in every single session and breaking the race track record, which was previously set by Exclusive Autosport driver Jack Mitchell, Jr. in 2014.

After leading the sole practice session on Saturday morning, Estep qualified the No. 90 Architext/Exclusive Autosport/Spectrum/Honda on pole for that afternoon’s first race of the weekend by half a second. He continued that statement of pace by leading every single lap of Saturday’s race en route to victory.

“The weekend started off well,” Estep said. “The Exclusive Autosport team definitely brought their A game.”

Estep again started on pole for Sunday morning’s race 2.  Though he lost the lead on the first lap, he fought hard through a caution-punctuated running and completed a daring last-lap pass to secure a second win.

Sunday afternoon’s race 3 was more eventful. After starting in P1 for the third time, Estep was hit from behind by a competitor and forced off-course in turn 1 of the first lap. He was able to rejoin in ninth position and work his way back to challenge for the lead within the span of a single lap. With 4 laps remaining Estep re-took the lead of the race until he was then intentionally hit from behind again by the same competitor, and the resulting damage from the second incident forced him to retire with left hand side rear damage.

However, the points scored for Estep’s eighth place finish were enough to secure the 2016 Formula 1600 Super Series – a combined title contested between the Ontario and Quebec Formula 1600 championships – for himself and the Exclusive Autosport team, a testament to the enormous effort and perseverance put forth by Estep and the entire crew.

“We knew coming into this weekend that it was important we have a perfect weekend,” said Exclusive Autosport team principal Michael Duncalfe. “Everyone was extremely focused on accomplishing that. The EA crew delivered a near perfect car and Trenton performed flawlessly every time he was on track.

“There was a lot of pressure on Trenton this weekend, and he performed like a pro. He didn’t put a wheel wrong all weekend, and he showed how strong of a driver he is and how strong of a package that EA and Spectrum put out there.”

Exclusive Autosport has one event remaining on its 2016 Canadian Formula 1600 competition calendar. The Formula Tour 1600 season wraps up at the Fall Classic at Circuit Mont-Tremblant from September 22 to 25. Estep is currently leading the Formula Tour 1600 Championship and is looking at add another title to his resume in a few weeks time. South of the border, Exclusive Autosport rejoins the F1600 Formula F Championship series next weekend, August 26 to 28, at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
