F1600 Super Series: Exclusive Autosport Qualifying Report - Five Exclusive Autosport drivers in the top 12. Tristan DeGrand on Pole.

The first day on track at the Honda Indy Toronto for Exclusive Autosport and the Toyo Tires F1600 Championship and the F1600 Super Series is officially in the books.  The day brought one practice session which took place early this morning and qualifying late in the afternoon.  After an exciting qualifying session, Exclusive Autosport drivers Max Hanratty, Jeff Kingsley, Jayson Clunie, Jack Mitchell Jr. and Tristan DeGrand find themselves within the top 11 on the starting grid for Race 1 tomorrow morning with DeGrand leading the charge with the coveted pole position.

The Toyo Tires F1600 field was the first group on track this morning. With practice being their only session before qualifying the field used the minimal track time to learn the ins and outs of the 11-turn street course.  Green flag racing was cut short due to a red flag.  Exclusive Autosport drivers had only four to six laps to familiarize themselves with their surroundings.  Three of the five Exclusive Autosport Spectrum Honda’s, driven by Jack Mitchell Jr. (P8), Tristan DeGrand (P9) and Jeff Kingsley (P10)  found the top ten during the short morning session.

Qualifying went smoother for the 28-car field, with the green flag waiving the entire 20 minute session.
DeGrand (Eureka, MO) in the #93 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Pro Am Golf / Honda Racing HPD neared the top of the time sheets most of the session, however it wasn’t until the final lap of the session that he put down his flyer.  His time of 1:20:159 edged out Brandon Newey by a mere tenth.

The team’s next best qualifier is reigning Toyo Tires F1600 A-Class series champion Jack Mitchell Jr. (Clarendon Hills, Illinois) in the #1 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Honda Racing HPD.  He put in a solid effort his first time on a street course today to put himself in the top five to start the first race of the weekend.  He put down a time of 1:20.688 to start P5.

Jayson Clunie (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) also had a solid day on the streets of Toronto.  Clunie put his #90 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Honda Racing HPD well into the top ten in P7 with a fast time of 1:20.931.

Port Hope Ontario’s and current Toyo Tires F1600 Rookie Champion leader Jeffrey Kinglsey in the #92 Whitby Toyota Scion / Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Nintendo Canada / Honda Racing HPD will start in the top ten in P10 with a fast time of 1:21:169.

Rounding out the Exclusive Autosport contingent is the #91 Juniper Networks / Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Honda Racing HPD driven by 21 year old Max Hanratty.  In only his second full year of racing, the team veteran qualified with a best time of 1:21:179 which puts him just outside the top ten in P11.

The first race of the F1600 Duals presented by Lubrico Warranty is set for 9:15 am EST.   Clunie, Hanratty, Kingsley, DeGrand and Mitchell Jr. and the rest of the Toyo Tires F1600 field will be signing autographs at 12:30 pm EST.

Tristan DeGrand, #93 Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Pro Am Golf USA / Honda Racing HPD

“Practice this morning was early in the day so the track was really “green”.  I went into the session not expecting much, just to go out and get a feel of where the track went. With the five laps we got in, I was able to get my bearings with the track and the car. In qualifying I was able to get a huge gap to the car ahead so I could solely focus on my driving. I had clean laps most of the session so I learned a lot and by the end I was able to put a lap together.  P1 is the best place to start at any track but here I think it's even more important.”

Max Hanratty, #91 Juniper Networks / Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Honda Racing HPD

“This mornings practice was very short because of a red flag and I was only able to complete four laps. We were also the first series to race on the street circuit which made it difficult to find grip with no rubber on the track. In qualifying the track gained a lot of grip and I was able to improve drastically on my lap time.  I was unable to put down the solid lap I needed to be upfront, however I brought the car home in 11th for the race tomorrow. The field is very tight this weekend with the top 12 all being within a second. We are going to work hard tonight going through data and video and find more pace for tomorrow's race. I want to thank the entire EA crew, and Juniper Networks for making all  of this possible.”

Jeffrey Kingsley, #92 Whitby Toyota Scion / Exclusive Autosport / Spectrum / Sparco / Exclusive Management Inc. / Nintendo Canada / Honda Racing HPD

“Today (Friday) at the Honda Indy Toronto we had both a practice session and qualifying. Being my first time at the track, and also at a street circuit, I knew that I had to be cautious. After a 6 lap practice do to a red flag, we ended up in the top ten. Qualifying I went out with nice clear track and put down some solid laps and times.  I ran in the top five the majority of the session, however ended up in the tenth.  Tomorrow I am definitely hoping to move up and make progression. This year is all about learning for me and this weekend is definitely going to be a huge learning experience! Thank you Exclusive Autosport, Spectrum, Sparco, Honda HPD, Nintendo Canada, and Whitby Toyota Scion for the continued support.”
